365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds

That’s how long it takes for the Earth to revolve around the Sun and that, some would say, is the reason we have an extra day every 4 years, in February. But we all know the real reason we have 29 days in February – it’s an extra day to go geocaching and earn a bonus souvenir too!

All around the globe geocachers are celebrating this special day and attending ‘Rare Square’ events in their area. One such event takes place at the Sea Terminal in Douglas at 5:30 p.m. 29th February 2016.

What is a ‘Rare Square’ you may ask? Well, geocachers like to get out and about in the fresh air as much as possible, it’s what the hobby is all about, taking you to new places, meeting new friends and getting plenty of exercise. Every day that you go out geocaching is marked on your personal ’Caching Calendar’. Finding a geocache on February 29th is a rare occurrence and one not to be missed.

Of course there are other challenges and some geocachers will attempt to find a geocache placed during EVERY month since the hobby started in 2000. Some will seek out geocaches placed on EVERY date in the calendar too. These are known as personal challenges and are what keeps the hobby exciting as you can set your own achievement targets. There are many such challenges and they can suit all ages and abilities.

So why not come along to the Sea Terminal on Monday 29th February between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. and see what it’s all about. Click THIS LINK to go to the geocache page and if you are a member write a log to say you ‘Will Attend’. If not just turn up on the day and you will be most welcome.
